Why Believe "JewAnon"
We May Sound Crazy, But It's True
This post is free to read, but I really appreciate discounted annual paid subscriptions of $48 ($4/month), which allow me to keep writing. And if that’s too much of a commitment, you can buy me a coffee! Or just share this post with your friends!
***Note: This is a long one and a bit all over the place but I promise there is an important call to action at the end!***
How can I still be surprised or even upset? When anyone is bombarded with the most heinous of accusations, images, stories — who wouldn’t be horrified? When your trusted news media, politicians, and celebrities are all telling you something, why wouldn’t you believe it? When it’s amplified and twisted by clickbait sites, boosted in social media algorithms, and altered with AI, who would suspect it isn’t all entirely true?
I know their algorithms look nothing like mine. Of course they think I’m the one who’s brainwashed. I must sound like QANON to them - JEWANON! When everyone you trust is telling you that Jews and Israelis are uniquely depraved, killing children on purpose, and using dogs to rape Palestinians, why are you going to believe me and Debra Messing? I’m sure I wouldn’t.
So how did it get to be this bad?
In 1993, U.S.-based Hamas activists and Palestine Committee members held a meeting in Philadelphia to strategize against the Oslo Accords and mask their American operations. The FBI recorded it and it served as key evidence in federal terrorism-support trials, most notably the 2008 prosecution of the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development. (Remember Mamdani’s shout out to the Holy Land Five?)
They correctly foresaw that the U.S. government would designate Hamas a terrorist organization and agreed on a strategy to frame the conflict in religious terms for Muslims while using more-palatable frames for non-Muslim Americans. They plotted to create an array of mainstream organizations to conduct this dual-track work…..Now run largely by Western-born activists, these networks understand how politics and media narratives work in the West. On college campuses those same networks use the language of postcolonial theory to tar the Israelis as “European settlers.”
Since then, Qatar has contributed between $6.6 billion and $8.8 billion to the United States education system. Beyond higher education, the Gulf state has deployed at least $65.3 million specifically over the last 15–20 years through the Qatar Foundation International (QFI). This is all part of a soft power strategy to gain leverage over research, influence academic narratives surrounding Middle Eastern geopolitics, and suppress campus criticism of the Qatari regime. And, horrifyingly, many NGOs that claim to promote human rights and humanitarian agendas use antisemitic themes and imagery to demonize the Jewish people and state of Israel. These are the same NGOs that have designated this war as a genocide.
The Muslim Brotherhood network played the long game and they played it perfectly. Mainstream media reports its “facts” straight from the mouths of Hamas-controlled health ministries and “journalists.” Students have been brainwashed for decades, social justice causes have been co-opted, politicians are happy to accept millions in PAC money from anyone as long as it can’t be tied to the Jews, and no one would dare steer from this narrative and become a pariah. Including many prominent Jews.
So, of course, even with a private social media feed, randoms from the past pop up like whack-a-moles to tell me just how wrong I am about everything and that if Jews are shot in the street, they have only themselves to blame. One woman I haven’t spoken to in a decade chimed in demanding to know why I did not visit Palestine during my trip to Israel to “get another perspective.” Maybe because Jews only enter Palestine by force and leave in a coffin while everyone hands out candy.
And now we have reached the day and age where Jews are stabbed and assaulted every day and once in a while it makes it to the mainstream news. Everyone was quick to insist that of course it has nothing to do with Mamdani’s constantly escalated rhetoric, telling an audience of tens of millions that Jews are killing Palestinian children on purpose.
His bullshit propaganda stunt about “arresting Netanyahu,” as usual, did nothing to help Palestinians - let alone New Yorkers. Israel has elections in three months and this gives Netanyahu a BOOST. And Mamdani knows it. Because he wants him to stay in power.
Because what is Mamdani and the left without their bogeyman? God forbid a reasonable, moderate or even a liberal comes into power in Israel to challenge the narrative they’ve written. It could be disastrous for the brand, after all.
Right before this speech, New York’s City Council criticized the Mamdani’s administration’s handling of a deadly Legionnaires’ outbreak. There was a city-wide tornado warning and massive flooding. This is how he chose to respond.
No one’s lives are better or safer for it and Jews are in that much more danger.
How can people be so blind not to see that Trump and Mamdani are using the exact same playbook?
Do nothing real to help people. Scapegoat entire populations. Lie. Deflect. Political theatre. Grandiose proclamations. Impossible promises.
“It’s because of immigrants/Latinos/Muslims/my political enemies”
“It’s because of Israel/Zionists/Jews”
How can you condemn one and applaud the other?
I wish I could pour ice water over the entirety of this nation to wake them up.
So why do I stay registered as a Democrat - and why should you?
Because all of this was decided in the primaries.
As it is in all bright blue areas, like the one in which I purposely had chosen to live. There has been a painful epidemic of Jews changing their party registration to Independent in States with closed primaries like Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey.
While I absolutely do not consider myself to be a Democrat anymore, I will never cede my power in these primaries - and neither should you. It’s not sending a message. The message is sent in the primaries and in the general election where you can vote for whomever you choose. Sadly, though, I expect our choices on both sides of the aisle will become even less palatable unless there is either a massive lobotomy campaign or a real designated, well-funded, and concerted effort — which brings me to…
***IMPORTANT ACTION ITEM***
Exciting news for those of us who want to support Democratic party moderates who reject extremism. The American Ideals PAC was founded by Julie Roginsky and former Congressman Tom Malinowski, two Democratic stalwarts who are also passionate about rooting out extremism. They know what they are doing and I wouldn’t be sharing their fundraising link if I didn’t completely trust them to spend money wisely and support our shared values. I truly believe this is the effort we have been waiting for. The American Ideals PAC supports candidates who believe that defending democracy at home and abroad must be the Democratic Party’s primary goal, and that we must unite pro-democracy Americans around it, not create divisions among them. They oppose racism, including anti-semitism, and ideological extremism on the right and left, and back leaders with the integrity to call these evils out especially from their own side. i will re-register for the next primary to vote where i am most needed! btw.
Spot-on as usual, Paige. Thanks for the head's up on the PAC.
